Summer 2007 - Day 17

Day 17

Today was spent walking around Innsbruck. A very popular tourist attraction in Innsbruck's Old Town is The Golden Roof. The Golden Roof was built by Archduke Friedrich IV in the early 15 th century as the residence of the Tirolean sovereigns.. It is capped with 2,738 gold plated copper tiles.
The Golden Roof was built in honour of the marriage of Emperor Maximilian I to Bianca Maria Sforza of Milan. Maximilian expanded his territory through marriage and not conquest. It was meant to serve as a royal box where he could sit in luxury and enjoy tournaments in the square below.

Also visited the Imperial Palace which was once the seat of the Tyrolean sovereigns. It was built by Archduke Siegmund the Rich around 1460.

Nearby is the Imperial Church which has memorial for Emperor Maximilian I.

The legendary King Arthur grew up as the pupil of the wizard Merlin. He was the leader of the Celtic Britons against the Anglo-Saxons at the beginning of the 6th century. Arthur became the perfect model of a medieval Knight with his order of Knights of the Round Table.

Innsbruck's cathedral, St Jacobs, was rebuilt between 1717 and 1724.

After a long walk to the outskirts of Innsbruck we visited Wilten Basilica. This gave the children the opportunity to complain about a long walk and having to visit another church.
The first church on this site was built in 1140 and was a sight of pilgrimage. The church fell into ruin and was replaced between 1751 and 1756.
